We’ve all been there. Receiving feedback on an English assessment and seeing the dreaded 3 words: “Needs more analysis.”
(Sometimes, it’s just a big red circle and ”???” which is even worse.)
At some point, most students realise that name-dropping 3 techniques isn’t enough, even if they sound fancy.
So, how do you get better at analysis?
It’s not just finding a technique. It’s about actually unpacking it - showing the how and why behind the technique’s effect. Once I made that shift in Year 11, my short answers and essays improved immediately. This is also what separates a Band 5 response from a Band 6 one in the HSC.
In this guide, I’ll break down the foolproof formula and mistakes to avoid, along with plenty of examples.
What Does a Band 6 Response Do Differently?
Band 6 students don’t just identify techniques. They:
- Show how it shapes meaning
- Explain why the composer chose it
- Link it tightly to the question
- Analyse with clarity, not waffle
