We’ve all been there. Receiving feedback on an English assessment and seeing the dreaded 3 words: “Needs more analysis.”

(Sometimes, it’s just a big red circle and ”???” which is even worse.)

At some point, most students realise that name-dropping 3 techniques isn’t enough, even if they sound fancy.

So, how do you get better at analysis?

It’s not just finding a technique. It’s about actually unpacking it - showing the how and why behind the technique’s effect. Once I made that shift in Year 11, my short answers and essays improved immediately. This is also what separates a Band 5 response from a Band 6 one in the HSC.

What Does a Band 6 Response Do Differently?

Band 6 students don’t just identify techniques. They:

  • Show how it shapes meaning
  • Explain why the composer chose it
  • Link it tightly to the question
  • Analyse with clarity, not waffle
