Year 11 Maths Accelerated vs. Year 11 Maths Advanced

Last updated: September 2024

Overview

Despite the names, both courses are actually ‘accelerated’ in the sense that students will learn both Year 11 AND Year 12 content. To be exact:

  • Students in Year 11 Advanced will learn the entirety of the Year 11 and 12 HSC Advanced Maths syllabus.
  • Students in Year 11 Accelerated will learn the entirety of the Year 11 and 12 HSC Extension 1 Maths syllabus (plus any parts of the Advanced syllabus needed to understand Extension 1 concepts).

I want my child to learn ahead of their school and gain an advantage in Mathematics in Year 12. Which course should we pick?

BOTH courses are designed to give students a significant advantage by the end of Year 11, giving them the freedom to choose how they want to approach their Mathematics studies in Year 12:

  • Students who are enrolled in Year 11 Extension 1 Maths, and want to pursue Extension 2 Maths in Year 12 would benefit from choosing Y11 Accelerated, since they will learn all Extension 1 content, so they are able to primarily focus on Extension 2 in Year 12.
  • Similarly, students who are enrolled in Year 11 Extension 1 Maths or Advanced Maths and intend to stay in their chosen course would benefit from choosing Y11 Prelim since they will learn all Advanced content, so they are able to primarily focus on Extension 1 in Year 12 (or simply revise topics as necessary if they are in Advanced Maths).

Since both courses are fast paced and accelerated, what if my child struggles with keeping up with content?

While some students may struggle balancing school content alongside the fast paced nature of our courses, Project has a few methods of supporting all students.

  1. Unlimited Tutorials: All Year 11 students get access to unlimited daily tutorials, which are smaller sessions of 1-4 students where students get individualised help from a 99+ ATAR tutor for 1.5 hours at a time. Students can enrol into as many tutorials as they like every day.
  2. Help till 9pm Daily:
    • Online help: Through the Slack app, students get direct access to tutors every day of the week. They can also message our Operations staff if they require help and they may be able to organise a staff member to help on demand.
    • In person help: For most parts of the year, daily homework-help sessions called “Thinktank” are held from 6pm to 9pm every day. These are supervised study session where students can ask tutors questions on demand.
  3. Progress Reports: At a parent’s request we can give data on a student’s:
    • Homework Completion
    • Project Exam Performance
    • Behaviour in Class and Tutorials

If you have further concerns, our academic staff are always happy to help you and your child navigate any challenges.

What can my child do after the course is finished?

Project offers courses for Year 12 Advanced, Extension 1 and Extension 2 Maths. On top of enjoying the same benefits as the Year 11 courses (unlimited tutorials, on-demand online and offline help, and detailed marking), students get access to our immensely popular ‘LEAP’ exam program, where students get to practise … (one last time, help me out here bahha). Additionally, all of the HSC Exams for Maths (Advanced to Extension 2) assess the content learned in both Year 11 and Year 12 - so in revising the content they learned in Year 11, students can gain a better understanding of these concepts and perform better in their exams.

The following flow chart encapsulates potential future options for students enrolled in our Year 11 courses:
