Welcome to HSC Physics Module 5: Advanced Mechanics.
In this guide, I’ll break down:
- The 5 most essential concepts in the module (with clear examples)
- Key skills you need to succeed in both exam questions and in-depth studies
- Sample MCQ and extended response with working
Key Concept 1: Projectile Motion in Two Dimensions
This is your first step into multi-directional motion. While Year 11 focused on linear motion (acceleration, velocity, displacement in 1D), here you’re dealing with two-dimensional motion under the influence of gravity.
You’ll split every projectile’s velocity into:
- Horizontal component → constant (no acceleration)
- Vertical component → accelerates due to gravity (−9.8 m/s²)
Core skills:
- Use trigonometry to resolve velocity vectors: and
- Apply the SUVAT equations separately in each direction
- Calculate time of flight, max height, and horizontal range
